Mining workforce management across Australia and New Zealand

Resources workforces are rarely in one place, on one roster or under one engagement model. A single operation can run permanent crews, FIFO contractors, specialist subcontractors and shutdown labour at the same time – across multiple sites, sometimes multiple states, often several entities.

Accelerate manages the engagement, compliance and payment of that workforce, so your site and HR teams can focus on operations rather than administration.

We support operators, mining services contractors, drilling and shutdown specialists and engineering businesses across Australia and New Zealand, with a team on the ground in Perth.

The workforce pressures facing mining and resources employers

Resources workforces are shaped by cycles rather than headcount plans. Shutdowns, turnarounds, expansions and commissioning all create sharp, temporary demand for people who need to be engaged, verified, inducted and paid – often at short notice and frequently at distance from where your administration sits.

The engagement mix is where the exposure builds. Direct employees, labour-hire workers, independent contractors, specialist subcontractors and sponsored visa holders can all be working on the same site under different obligations for classification, award or agreement coverage, superannuation, insurance and record-keeping. Those obligations then vary again by state, and again by whether the work is metalliferous, coal, oil and gas or civil construction on a resources site.

Then there’s remoteness. FIFO and DIDO arrangements bring travel, accommodation and allowance treatments that most payroll functions handle infrequently and therefore handle inconsistently. Roster patterns rarely align neatly to a standard pay cycle. When this is managed in spreadsheets across several site teams, errors compound quietly until an audit, a back-pay claim or a dispute surfaces them.

How Accelerate supports mining and resources workforces

We’re not a labour hire supplier with a payroll system attached. We manage the full lifecycle of a contingent and sponsored workforce – engagement, compliance, payment and offboarding – under one commercial arrangement.

Contingent Workforce Management

Onboard, manage and pay contractors and on-hired workers across multiple sites, rosters and entities, with full visibility.

Employer-Sponsored Migration

Access skilled trades and technical roles from overseas through employer sponsorship with guidance from our Registered Migration Agent.

SID 482 & On-Hire Labour Agreement

Skills in Demand 482 sponsorship, including on-hire arrangements that let sponsored workers be placed with host businesses.

Employer of Record

The engagement model underpinning how we employ and manage workers on your behalf, in Australia and internationally.

Payroll & Workforce BPO

Award and agreement interpretation, site allowances, roster loadings, timesheet processing and payment run management.

Compliance & Risk Management

Classification reviews, engagement documentation and audit-ready records across every worker type on site.

Compliance across every engagement type

Resources sites carry a heavier compliance load than most industries, because the workforce on any given site is rarely engaged under a single model.

Worker classification

The employee/contractor line is a well-documented risk area, and getting it wrong reaches back through superannuation, leave entitlements and payroll tax. We review how each worker is engaged against how the work is actually performed, and document the basis for that decision.

Awards, agreements and site conditions

Resources workforces sit across a mix of modern awards and enterprise agreements, with site allowances, roster loadings, travel and accommodation arrangements and overtime patterns that vary by operation. Our payroll team confirms the applicable instrument for each cohort and applies it consistently, rather than leaving interpretation to individual site administrators.

FIFO, DIDO and remote arrangements

Travel, accommodation and living-away arrangements carry tax and FBT treatments that most payroll functions encounter infrequently. We handle these as core business and keep the records that evidence the treatment applied.

Licensing obligations

Labour hire licensing schemes operate in some Australian states and territories, and the obligations attach to how workers are engaged rather than what they do. We manage the requirements that apply to your arrangement.

Sponsorship obligations

Where skilled workers are engaged through employer sponsorship, obligations continue for the life of the visa – including market salary rate requirements, record-keeping and notification duties.

Why mining and resources employers choose Accelerate

Workforce and migration under one roof.

Most providers do one or the other. When a skills shortage becomes a sponsorship question, it doesn’t become someone else’s problem – or another vendor relationship.

A Registered Migration Agent in-house.

Immigration assistance in Australia is regulated. Our migration practice is led in-house by Virginia Bennett, Registered Migration Agent (MARN 2217993) – so sponsorship for your trades and technical roles is handled by a qualified specialist, not referred out.

On the ground in Western Australia.

Our Perth team works with resources employers across WA, alongside a national and New Zealand footprint. Engagement models, payroll and compliance handled consistently across jurisdictions, so an operation in one state isn’t run differently to an operation in another.

Who we help in mining and resources

Our resources workforce support suits:

  • Mining operators: Managing permanent, contract and FIFO workforces across single or multiple sites.
  • Mining services and METS contractors: Scaling a workforce against a client contract pipeline rather than a headcount plan.
  • Drilling, shutdown and maintenance specialists: Mobilising and demobilising crews at short notice, repeatedly, across multiple client sites.
  • Engineering, EPC and consultancy businesses: Including international firms delivering in Australia without a local entity.
  • Oil, gas and energy operators: Managing mixed engagement models across onshore and offshore operations.
  • Employers sponsoring from overseas for the first time: Who need guidance through Standard Business Sponsorship before they can hire.

Mining & Resources Workforce FAQs

Q1. Does Accelerate supply mining labour?
Not directly. Accelerate is a workforce management business, not a labour hire supplier. We engage, pay, sponsor and manage your workforce – including workers sourced by your own team or by a recruitment partner – and we can support sourcing through our Integrated Talent Solutions offering.

Q2. Can you manage a FIFO workforce?
Yes. Rostered, remote and fly-in fly-out arrangements are part of our normal operating environment. We manage engagement, timesheet processing and payment against the roster pattern that applies, rather than forcing it into a standard pay cycle.

Q3. How do you handle the employee versus contractor question in mining?
We review each engagement against how the work is actually performed, not just what the contract says, and document the basis for the classification. It’s the area where exposure builds most quietly across a mixed site workforce.

Q4. Can you manage workers across multiple sites and states?
Yes. We manage engagement, compliance and payroll centrally while accounting for the obligations that vary by jurisdiction, so a multi-site operation doesn’t need a separate process per location.

Q5. Can you help us sponsor overseas trades and technical workers?
Yes. Employer-sponsored migration is one of our core services, led in-house by our Registered Migration Agent. We manage the full process – Standard Business Sponsorship, nomination and visa application – and can then manage that worker as part of your ongoing workforce.

Q6. Which mining roles can be sponsored?
Eligibility depends on the occupation, the visa pathway and your business circumstances. We assess your specific roles rather than have you work from a list.

Q7. We don’t have an Australian entity. Can you still engage workers for us?
Yes – through an Employer of Record arrangement. Workers are engaged compliantly under Accelerate while you retain day-to-day direction of the work.

Q8. Do you work with mining services contractors as well as operators?
Yes. We work across the contracting chain, from operators through to specialist services contractors, drilling and shutdown providers and engineering consultancies.
